diode  model  of   a  photovoltaic  PV   solar  cell  (P VSC)  is   estimat ed  for  an  experiment al   characterist ic  cu rves  data  by   using  a   r ecently  proposed  version  of  the   particle  swarm   optimiza tion  (PSO)   algorithm,   which  is  known  as  the  autonom ous  groups  particles  swarm  optim ization  (PS OAG).  This  meta - heuristic  algorithm  is  used   to  identify  the   model  of  the   PVSC.  The   PSOAG  divides  the  particles  into   groups  and  then,   uses  different  funct ions  to   tune  the  social  and   cognitive  parameters  of   these  groups .  By   usin g  these  groups, the performance of  the PSO is improved  in terms of converge nce rate  and  escaping  the  local   minima/maxima.  Six   versions  of   PSOAG  alg orithms  were  developed  in  this  work.  Therefore,  nine  versions   of  PSOAG,  in cluding  these  six  algorith ms  and  three  newly  developed  PSOAG  reported  previously,  will  be  used  in  this  research  to  cover  more  social’s  behaviors.  Th e  res ults  are  compared  to  the  original   PSO  and  other  versions   of  PSO  like  conve ntional   and  asymmetr ic tim e - varying accelera ted coeffi c ient PSOs,  and the im proved  PSO.  The  result  shows  that  the  proposed  methods  improve  the  performance  by  up  to  14%  in  terms  of  root   mean  squared  error  and   maximum  a bsolute  error,  and  by  up  to  20%  in  term   of  convergence  rate,  when   thes e  were  compared t o the b est resul ts obt ained from  the ot her algori thms.    K e y w o r d s :   A ut onomous  gr oups   C ogni ti ve  c oe f f ic ie nt   O ne -
