based  optimization  (T LBO)  algorithm  is   applied  in   th is  area  to obtain the  paramete rs of the  proposed  PI controlle r. The de sign  pro blem is  formulated  as  an  optimizat ion  problem  and  TLBO  is  employed   to  op timize  the  parameters  of  the  PI   controller.  The  superi ority   of  proposed  appr oach  is   demonstrated by comparing the results with that of the conve ntional methods  like  g enetic  algorithm   (GA)  and   particle  swarm   optimization  (PSO ) .  It  is   observed  that  TLBO   optimized  PI   controller  gives   better  d ynamic  performance  i n  terms  of  settling  time,  overshoot ,   and  undershoot  as  co mpared  to  GA  and  PSO   based  PI   controllers.  The   various  performance  indic es  like   mean  square  error  (MSE),   integral  absolute  error   (IAE),  and  integra l  time   absolut e  error  (ITAE)  are  improved   by  using   the  TLBO  soft   com puting   techniques.   F urther,  robustness  of  the  system  is  studied  by  varying  all  the  system paramete rs from − 50% to + 50% in step of 25%.  Analysis also r eveals  that  TLBO  optimized  PI   controller  gains   are  quite   robust  and   need  not   b e  reset  for  wide variation in  system parameters.   K e y w o r ds :   G e ne ti c  a lg or it hm   M e a n s qu a r e  e r r or   P a r ti c le  s w a r m  opt im iz a ti on   P r opor ti ona l – in te gr a l   T e a c hi ng l e a r ni ng -
