10.11591/ijece.v5i3.pp391-402
Abdelghani Rouini , Djillali Mahi
High voltage device dimensioning requires the prediction of the withstand voltage for test conditions  like impulses, surges and AC voltage. There is a large need of designer to have reliable design criteria and well-defined simulation procedure for device development. This parametric study is based on the methodology of experimental  designs.  This method allowed us  to  propose  a mathematical polynomial model. The objective of this paper is to study the discharge phenomena for a point –plane air  interval with insulating barrier between them. Firstly on experimental study of a laboratory setup that we designed to carry out the influence of parameters (geometrical) involved in the process of breakdown. The distance between electrodes and different parameters of the barrier such as its position between electrodes dimension and its holes is studied . The barrier acts as a geometrical obstacle against the direct propagation of discharge. Secondly, using results obtained by the experimental setup , we have experiments design  methodology of technique to predict the breakdown threshold voltage.

Alleviating Interference through Cognitive Radio for LTE-Advanced Network

10.11591/ijece.v5i3.pp539-547
Tsung-Hui Chuang , Guan-Hong Chen , Meng-Hsun Tsai , Chun-Lung Lin
In the LTE-Advanced network, some femtocells are deployed within a macroecell for improving throughput of indoor user equipments (UEs), which are referred to as femtocell UEs (FUEs). Cross-tier interference is an important issue in this deployment, which may significantly impact signal quality between Macrocell Base Stations (MBSs) and Macrocell User Equipments (MUEs), especially for MUEs near the femtocell. To relieve this problem, the Third Generation Partnership Project Long Term Evolution-Advanced (3GPP LTE-Advanced) de fined the cognitive radio enhanced femtocell to coordinate interference for LTE-Advanced Network. Cognitive radio femtocells have the ability to sense radio environment to obtain radio parameters. In this paper, we investigated the performance of existing schemes based on fractional frequency reuse. Therefore, we proposed a scheme with cognitive radio technology to improve the performance of fractional fre-quency reuse scheme. Simulation results showed that our scheme can effectively enhance average downlink throughput of FUEs as well as the total downlink throughput in LTE-Advanced Networks.

Shahana Bano , K.Rajasekara Rao
In this paper we proposed a method which avoids the choice of natural language processing tools such as pos taggers and parsers reduce the processing overhead. Moreover, we suggest a structure to immediately create a large-scale corpus annotated along with disease names, which can be applied to train our probabilistic model. In this proposed work context rank based hierarchical clustering method is applied on different datasets namely colon, Leukemia, MLL medical diseases. Optimal rule filtering algorithm is applied on these datasets to remove unwanted special characters for gene/protein identification. Finally, experimental results show that proposed method outperformed existing methods in terms of time and clusters space.

Improvement of Power Quality for Microgrid using Fuzzy Based UPQC Controller

10.11591/ijai.v4.i2.pp37-44
Abdul Rasheed , G. Keshava Rao
Generally, the power systems are mainly effected by the continuous changes in operational requirement and increasing amount of distributed energy systems. This paper proposes a new concept of power-control strategies for a micro grid generation system for better transfer of power. The micro grids are obtained with the general renewable energy sources and this concept provides the maximum utilization of power at environmental free conditions with low losses; then the system efficiency is also improved. This paper proposes a single stage converter based micro grid to reduce the number of converters in an individual ac or dc grid. The proposed micro grid concept can work in both stand-alone mode and also in grid interfaced mode. The distortions that occur in power system due to changes in load or because of usage of non-linear loads, can be eliminated by using control strategies designed for shunt active hybrid filters such as series and shunt converters. A conventional Proportional Integral (PI) and Fuzzy Logic Controllers are used for power quality enhancement by reducing the distortions in the output power. The simulation results are compared among the two control strategies, that fuzzy logic controller and pi controller.

Mostafa Abdul Fellani , Aboubaker M. Gabaj
The industrial application of Coupled Tank System (CTS) is widely used especially in chemical process industries. The control of liquid level in tanks and flow between tanks is a problem in the process technologies. The process technologies require liquids to be pumped, stored in tanks, and then pumped to another tank systematically. This paper presents development of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller for controlling the desired liquid level of the CTS. Various conventional techniques of PID tuning method will be tested in order to obtain the PID controller parameters. Simulation is conducted within MATLAB environment to verify the performances of the system in terms of Rise Time (Ts), Settling Time (Ts), Steady State Error (SSE) and Overshoot (OS). The trial and error method of tunning will be implemented and all the performance results will be analyzed using MATLAB. It has been demonstrated that performances of CTS can be improved with appropriate technique of PID tuning methods.

10.11591/ijece.v5i3.pp586-598
Yunjin Lee , Mingyu Lim , Yangchan Moon
In this paper, we present our communication middleware (CM), which is designed to reduce the effort of developing common communication functionalities for social networking services (SNSs) in the client-server model. SNS developers can apply the application-level communication services of CM both to an SNS server and to client applications simply by calling application programming interfaces (APIs) and configuring various options related to communication services. CM was developed to enable SNS developers to easily build fundamental services such as transmission of a user-defined event, user membership and authentication management, friend management, content upload and download with different numbers of attachments, chat management, and direct file transfer. All of the communication services also provide options that a developer can customize according to his or her SNS requirements.

Windra Swastika , Yoshitada Masuda , Takashi Ohnishi , Hideaki Haneishi
Thoracic time-sequential MRI can be used to assess diaphragm motion pattern without exposing radiation to subject. Clinicians may employ the motion to evaluate the severeness of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study proposed a novel method of diaphragm motion extraction method on time-sequential thoracic MRI in sagittal plane. Otsu’s threshold and active contour algorithm are used to obtain diaphragm boundary. An automatic diaphragm motion tracking and extraction of respiratory pattern are also performed based on the diaphragm boundary. A total of 1200 frames time-sequential MRI in sagittal plane was obtained for total of 15 subjects (8 healthy volunteers and 7 COPD patients). The proposed method successfully extracts diaphragm motion and respiratory patterns for both healthy volunteers and COPD patients. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v14i2.7375

Power Optimization of Spark Ignition Engine by Fuzzy Logic Ignition Controller Based on Knock Detection

https://ijeecs.iaescore.com/index.php/IJEECS/article/view/1475
Agus Sujono , Raden Soekrisno , Eka Firmansyah , Oyas Wahyunggoro
Spark ignition engines have many advantages, but to increase the power and efficiency, they have a problem to set the right ignition timing, at which the maximum power can be delivered. In reality, the optimum ignition time is immediately prior to, or close to, the moment of detonation (knock). On the other hand, the value of this optimum ignition timing is dependent primarily on the rotation of the crank shaft and the level of throttle openings. To provide the right  timing proficiency level, it is very difficult to overcome the mechanical control system as found in conventional engines. So, in this study, a new electro-mechanical method based on Fuzzy Logic Ignition Controller (FLIC) which follows the pattern of the timing in the detonation chart was created. The results of the FLIC study, in fact, are able to provide correction for each spark plug ignition, according to the data on the chart of the optimal ignition timings for all combinations of engine rotations and throttle openings. From the final data recorded, it can be said that the FLIC influence on the power output which increases of up to 15% above normal. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v14i2.7597

Optimal Placement of Phasor Measurement Unit for Better Power System Observability

https://ijeecs.iaescore.com/index.php/IJEECS/article/view/1466
K. Deebiga , A. Raqib Hussain
Secure and reliable opertation of the grid requires real time monitoring and control of entire power system. Phasor measurement units (PMU) are being deployed for real time monitoring and analysis of power system. The most important factor to be considered in placement problem is observability of power system with minimum number of PMUs. This paper proposed an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) based optimization approach to minimize the number of PMUs in the network. The proposed work determines the number of PMUs and its placement, while maximizing the system observability in normal operating condition. In this paper modeling of zero-injection bus has been formulated to reduce the number of PMUs further. Simulations are carried out in Standard IEEE 14 and IEEE 30 bus system, the results indicate the ILP approach determines the minimum number of PMUs and improves Observabiltity of the Power System. DOI:  http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v14i2.7605

Rotor Position Sensorless Control of BLDC Motor based on Back Emf Detection Method

https://ijeecs.iaescore.com/index.php/IJEECS/article/view/1469
M. Murugan , R. Jayabharath , C. Gurunathan
In this paper an improved back emf detection method is proposed. The motor neutral voltage is elemenated and the phase back emf zero crossing point can be directly extracted by detecting voltage difference between the phase terminal and the midpoint of the dc link. Here filtering circuit is not needed and the BLDC motor is provided with PWM control of 100% duty ratio which is presented in this paper. To perform the inverter commutation, there is a need of six commutation signals which is obtained by sensing only one of the three phase terminals that reduces the cost of the sensing circuit. The reduction of the imbalance in the six commutation signals which are caused by the asymmetrical behavior of the three phase windings in BLDC motor had been reduced in a varied speed range. It simplifies the starting procedure and achieve the motor performance over a wide speed range. This proposed method is analyzed through the simulation results using MATLAB Simulink. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.11591/telkomnika.v14i2.7423
