Detecting human fall using internet of things devices for healthcare applications

10.11591/ijai.v14.i1.pp561-569
Zakaria Benhaili , Youssef Balouki , Lahcen Moumoun
Falls pose a significant threat to unintentional injuries, particularly impacting the independence of older individuals. Existing detection methods suffer from drawbacks, including inaccuracies, wearer discomfort, complex setup, resource-intensive computation, and limitations in detecting falls outside a specific setting. In response, our innovative fall detection system integrates with a pneumatic solution, analyzing fundamental human activities like running, walking, and sitting, both indoors and outdoors. This approach combines wearable sensors with a vision-based solution, utilizing a smart belt with embedded accelerometer and gyroscope, alongside wall-installed cameras in a smart house. The system triggers an airbag and sends an emergency alarm upon fall detection. To achieve this, we propose FallMixer a lightweight deep learning model, combined with ‘you only look once’ version 8 (YOLOv8) algorithm, fine-tuned on a collected video dataset to enable real-time detection. We found that the models result in competitive performance, as demonstrated on SisFall, UCI human activity recognition (HAR), and mobile health (MHEALTH) datasets with a remarkable mean average precision. Subsequently, we assess the hardware performance of our solution on edge devices.

Nagaraja Gadde , Rashmi Shivaswamy , Ramesh Babu Halasinanagenahalli Siddamal , Gowrishankar Gowrishankar , Govindaih Thimma Raju , Subramani Suryakumar Prabhu Vijay
The future generation of heterogeneous wireless networks (HWNs) will combine various radio access technologies for connecting various mobile subscribers (MS) based on the quality of service (QoS) and wireless network parameters, connecting MS to the best possible wireless network (WN) has been a trending research topic in HWNs. Existing resource optimization methods are designed to meet the QoS of network criteria and user preferences are neglected. Very limited work is done for resource optimization considering user preferences. However, these models are designed considering multi-mode terminals (MMTs) running a single service at a time under a low-density network; as a result, cannot be adopted to run multiple services simultaneously and; thus, fail to meet current users’ service dynamics requirement. Further, fails to bring good tradeoffs between reducing interference and improving performance. In addressing the research problem this work introduced a hybrid resource optimization strategy (HROS) to reduce interference by establishing channel availability and enhancing resource utilization through game theory. The HROS proves the existence of nash equilibrium (NE) improves throughput by 16.32% and reduces collision by 26.16% over the existing resource optimization-based network selection (RONS) scheme.

Dias Tri Kurniasari , Siti Rochimah
Testing is an important aspect of software development. Automation testing is now widely used to achieve better and more efficient results. Various automation testing frameworks are available in the market. However, one of the major challenges is determining which automation testing framework is suitable for testing. This study proposes an evaluation model for evaluating web automation testing frameworks based on seven performance efficiency factors to address this issue. The model evaluates five types of transactions commonly used on the web; CRUD, Get Massive Data, search, file upload, and file download. In addition, the tested frameworks are categorized as good, medium, and low. To measure the success of the research, expert weighting was also used. Based on the results obtained for all types of transactions, almost all classifications between the experimental results and weighting were in the same class. Although the model was found to be effective with a 100% accuracy rate, it had an accuracy rate of 80% for upload transactions. The outcomes of this study serve as a valuable reference for choosing suitable software for both tested frameworks and other software applications. In future studies focus on narrowing the selection based on not only performance but also functionality and ease of use.

Suresh Kumar Krishnamoorthi , Govindharaju Karthi , Moorthy Radhika , Anantha Raman Rathinam , Ayalapogu Ratna Raju , Latika Pinjarkar , Chelliah Srinivasan
Improving patient outcomes in critical care settings is significantly connected to effective ventilation control. This research introduces a new method for improving ventilation methods in critical healthcare utilizing a long short-term memory (LSTM) network hosted in the cloud. Ventilators, pulse oximeters, and capnography are just a few examples of medical equipment that input data into the system, which then uploads the data to the cloud for analysis. The LSTM network can learn from data patterns and correlations, drawing on respiratory parameters' time dynamics, to provide real-time suggestions and predictions for ventilation settings. The system aims to improve clinical results and reduce the risk of ventilator-induced lung damage by tailoring ventilation techniques according to each patient's requirements and by forecasting potential issues. Due to remote monitoring technology, medical professionals can quickly analyze their patient's conditions and act accordingly. The system allows for continuous improvement using iterative learning of more data and feedback. With the ability to optimize breathing and enhance patient care in critical healthcare situations, a hopeful development in airway management is needed.

The development of ontologies is crucial in digital humanities research. This study focuses on creating a system to extract meaning from knowledge related to the Bai Sri Su Kwan ritual. Addressing semantic gaps, the second phase of our research outlines methods for developing an ontology for Bai Sri Su Kwan rituals. To fully understand this significant ritual in the Mekong Basin, we employed a theoretical framework with seven ontology development steps, using the Hozo Ontology Editor. Our ontology includes nine main classes: Bai Sri Su Kwan (A ritual subclass), persons, chants, belief, purpose, wish, literature, locations, and equipment. The Bai Sri Su Kwan subclass connects with all other classes in the ontology. This ontology forms the basis for a meaning search system for the Bai Sri Su Kwan ceremony in future research stages. The ontology was evaluated syntactically through human assessment and the OOPS! Ontology Pitfall Scanner. Validation results for the Bai Sri Su Kwan Ontology show no pitfalls in critical dimensions, indicating high integrity and reliability.

10.11591/ijeecs.v37.i2.pp888-902
Cesar Hernández , Diego Giral , Camila Salgado
Cognitive radio networks positively impact the performance of wireless communications and have proven to be an excellent alternative for efficient and effective use of the radio spectrum. However, few proposals collaboratively work on decision-making in decentralized cognitive radio networks. The present work refers to a novel method and device that reduces the rate of channel changes during secondary user communications in decentralized cognitive radio networks through a collaborative spectral decision between several secondary users while allowing multiple secondary users access to the network. This proposal consists of a multi-user unit that regulates the access of multiple secondary users (SUs) to the spectrum, a priority unit that guarantees timely access to the SUs according to their level of importance, and a prediction unit that forecasts the arrival time of the primary user (PU). This multichannel unit regulates the assignment of multiple spectral opportunities to the SU according to the type of application it is using and a unit of deep learning that determines which spectral opportunity(s) are most suitable for each SU and spectral allocation. The results obtained allow us to satisfactorily validate the proposal developed and corroborate the importance of collaborative work in decision-making to select spectral opportunities.

As humans, we can easily recognize and distinguish different features of objects in images due to our brain’s ability to unconsciously learn from a set of images. The objectives of this effort are to develop a model that is capable of identifying and categorizing objects that are present within images. We imported the dataset from Keras and loaded it using data loaders to achieve this. We then utilized various deep learning algorithms, such as visual geometry group (VGG)-16 and a simple net-random forest hybrid model, to classify the objects. After classification, the accuracy obtained by VGG16 and the hybrid model was 84.7% and 89.6%, respectively. Therefore, the proposed model successfully detects objects in images using a simple net as a feature extractor and a random forest for object classification, achieving better accuracy than VGG16.

In this study, we assess three convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures—VGG16, ResNet50, and InceptionV3 for multi classification of fundus images in the retinal fundus multi-disease image dataset (RFMID2), comprising of 860 images. Focusing on diabetic retinopathy, exudation, and hemorrhagic retinopathy, we preprocessed the dataset for uniformity and balance. Using transfer learning, the models were adapted for feature extraction and fine-tuned to our multi-label classification task. Their performance was measured by subset accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, hamming loss, and Jaccard score. VGG16 emerged as the top performer, with the highest subset accuracy (84.81%) and macro precision (95.83%), indicating its superior class distinction capabilities. ResNet50 showed commendable accuracy (79.75%) and precision (86.70%), whereas InceptionV3 lagged with lower accuracy (66.67%) and precision (81.21%). These findings suggest VGG16’s depth offers advantages in multi-label classification, highlighting InceptionV3’s limitations in complex scenarios. This analysis helps optimize CNN architecture selection for specific tasks, suggesting future exploration of dataset variability, ensemble methods, and hybrid models for improved performance.

Modified-vehicle detection and localization model for autonomous vehicle traffic system

10.11591/ijeecs.v37.i2.pp1183-1200
Amit Juyal , Sachin Sharma , Shuchi Bhadula
The modification of vehicles for financial gain is an evolving tendency observed in India. Recognizing and detecting of these modified illicit cars is an important but critical task in autonomous vehicles (AV). It is always possible for a cyclist or pedestrian to traverse obstacles or other fixed objects that appear in front of any moving vehicle. Vehicles that are autonomous or self-driving require a different system to quickly identify both stationary and moving objects. A deep learning model named you only look once version 5 (YOLOv5)-convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is proposed here for the Indian traffic system which is based on YOLOv5m. The proposed algorithm, YOLOv5-CBAM, has three major components. The first module, the backbone module is employed for feature extraction. The second module is to detect static as well as dynamic objects at the same time and the third CBAM module is adopted in the backbone and neck part, which mainly focuses on the more prominent features. Two cross stage partial (CSP) modules were used after every convolutional layer resulting in an additional head to the proposed model. Four head modules equipped with anchor boxes performed the final detection. For the present dataset, the proposed model showed 98.2% mean average precision (mAP), 98.4% precision, and 94.8% recall as compared to the original YOLOv5m.

Integration of message queue and drop policy in spray and hop distance protocol for DTNs in smart city scenario

10.11591/ijeecs.v37.i2.pp839-848
Agussalim Agussalim , Masato Tsuru , I Gede Susrama Mas Diyasa , Basuki Rahmat
Implementing delay tolerant networks (DTNs) in smart cities for developing countries is promising. DTNs offer a low-cost network communication solution without expensive infrastructure, such as 3G/4G or LPWA networks provided by commercial operators. This paper considers sensor data collection in the Surabaya smart city scenario, and the use of DTNs is examined instead of the expensive infrastructure. However, a customized and optimized protocol is required since no existing DTN routing protocol perfectly matches the scenario. This paper proposes integrating a hop count-based message queue (HCMQ) and a message time-to-live (TTL)-based drop policy (MTDP) into the spray and hop distance protocol (SNHD), an enhanced version of the spray and wait (SNW) protocol. The Surabaya smart city scenario was simulated on the one simulator with a wide range of message generation rates at each sensor node. The proposed integration significantly improves the total size of delivered messages, especially when the message generation rate is high, i.e., in congested situations, compared to other routing protocols in this scenario. It also exhibits an average latency lower than other routing protocols. Overall, this integration enhances the DTNs protocol’s performance in a low-cost alternative data collection in the Surabaya smart city scenario.
