Lead-acid battery desulfation using a high-frequency pulse desulfator in standalone PV systems

10.11591/ijape.v13.i4.pp853-861
Anas El Filali , El Mehdi Laadissi , Jaouad Khalfi , Malika Zazi
The work presented in this article contributes to the study of a standalone photovoltaic (PV) system with battery storage by creating an electronic board that allows for the recovery of the battery's capacity using pulse technology that uses high-energy pulses from the PV panel to break down and remove the sulfation buildup, which is a contributing factor in the failure of most lead-acid batteries. Different methods or treatments can be used to lessen the impact of sulfation or even get rid of it and achieve battery rejuvenation. Battery sulfation is a process in which sulfate crystals form on the plates of a lead-acid battery, impeding its ability to retain a charge, and decreasing the battery’s overall effectiveness. This process can happen due to various reasons, such as charging for a shorter time than required, charging for a longer period of time than required, or even not charging it for quite some time. Sulfation affects a battery’s lifespan and comes with adverse effects on its performance, though it can be prevented.

Maryudi Maryudi , Dhias Cahya Hakika , Firda Mahira Alfiata Chusna , Amillia Amillia
Membrane technology is a technique in water and wastewater treatment that has many advantages. This study focuses on the manufacture and characterization of cellulose acetate propionate (CAP) membranes using the phase inversion method. The CAP is preferable since it is a biopolymer that is environmentally friendly and cheap. The production of CAP membrane was carried out using phase inversion method, and varied in 3 different concentrations of CAP i.e., 13, 14, and 15% wt., with additional material of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The characterization was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis to determine its morphology, pores, and functional groups. The results show that the membrane containing 13% wt. CAP exhibits higher porosity with more macropores than a membrane with 14 and 15% wt. CAP. However, membranes with higher concentrations of CAP show more uniform pores and fewer macropores. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups in the membrane such as C-O, -CH3, C=O, C-H, and –OH. It is also found that there is a shift in Wavenumber due to the increase in the concentration of CAP in each membrane.

Evaluating a novel bidirectional soft-switching DC-DC converter for electric vehicles

10.11591/ijape.v13.i4.pp825-834
Prasannakumar Inampudi , P. Chandrasekar , T. Vijay Muni
This research aims to build unique zero voltage transition (ZVT) non-isolated bidirectional DC-DC converters for hybrid electric vehicle battery storage. First, a high-voltage gain bidirectional converter (BDC) is examined. This converter can soft-switch insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). The primary insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are operated under zero-current conditions throughout the turn-on to turn-off commutation phase to reduce switching losses and increase efficiency. A soft-switched cell with a resonant inductor, capacitor, and additional IGBTs achieves zero-current turn-off. A new converter uses insulated-gate bipolar transistors with zero-voltage transition operation. Soft-switched cells improve the hard-switched bridgeless DC-DC converter (BDC). Resonant inductors, capacitors, and auxiliary switching devices make up the soft-switched cell. Soft-switched cells enable zero voltage turn-on of primary insulated-gate bipolar transistors. This converter charges the battery in buck mode and boosts it to provide the necessary output voltage. This study examined a 70 V/300 V power system's high-gain bidirectional converter (BDC) design simulation. The converter was tested at 50 kHz with 800 W output power. The high-gain soft-switched BDC has 96.5% boost and 97% buck efficiency. Operating principles, design analysis, and simulation assessments are included in this study.

Karen Etania Saputra , Riccosan Riccosan
Recent developments in technology have made it easier to produce digital con- tent, especially textual articles. But, it has a negative impact in the form of a rising public skepticism of digital data due to plagiarism. Indonesia, one of the world’s most populous countries, is not resistant to this problem. To resolve it, the authorship attribution (AA) task must be executed. However, there has been little investigation on AA for Indonesian articles. As a result, this research applies the AA task to an Indonesian digital news articles dataset. Continuing the previous research, dataset modification was carried out to increase data com- plexity by adding a new class, namely the author’s gender, and also by balancing the distribution of data versus labels to minimize potential overfitting, and model hyper-parameter configurations were carried out to enhance the results gained. This research successfully applied the IndoBERT model to the Indonesian AA task, yielding results in the form of precision = 0.92, recall = 0.90, and F1-score = 0.91. These results indicate that the Indonesian AA task has a lot of potential for development since it identifies writing patterns that may benefit the forensic field, detect plagiarism, and analyze Indonesian texts.

10.11591/ijape.v13.i4.pp920-927
Abdulrasaq Jimoh , Samson Oladayo Ayanlade , Funso Kehinde Ariyo , Moses Taiwo Adebayo
The static var compensator (SVC) is a member of the family of flexible alternating current transmission systems controllers used in power system engineering to manage specific transmission network characteristics to enhance the performance of the transmission networks and thus increase the networks’ reliability. Power system engineers typically find it difficult to choose which SVC model to implement for simulations. This research aims to address this issue by conducting a comparative examination of two key SVC models on a transmission network. The two models of SVC variable shunt susceptance and firing angle were mathematically modeled and methodically included into the Newton-Raphson power flow algorithm for the network power flow solution. The IEEE 30-bus network was adopted as the test case, and the method was implemented in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The network performance metric utilized was the voltage profile of the network. The two SVC models were successful in enhancing the network's performance; however, the variable shunt susceptance model was computationally faster than the firing angle model, as revealed by the simulation results. Therefore, among the two SVC models, the variable shunt susceptance model may be taken into account for simulation to enhance the performance of the transmission networks.

In recent years, the building sector's energy consumption in Morocco has been steadily increasing, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable building practices. Optimizing building parameters and the development of new insulation materials have become critical areas of research due to the significant energy losses associated with traditional insulation materials. Insulation materials can be a simple and cost-effective way to improve building energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. Unfortunately, not all of these materials exhibit favorable thermal characteristics such as conductivity or heat capacity. Some involve complex production processes, while others are prohibitively expensive or toxic. At this juncture, the strategy of integrating ecological materials with insulation materials to enhance thermal performance holds considerable promise. This paper investigates the impact of the integration of poncebloc and hemp wool in inside temperature and annual consumption of a building construction numerically under a transient simulation program (TRNSYS). The results show that by using these two materials along with double-glazed windows, energy savings ranging from 50-55% can be achieved.

Aparna Chilakawad , Pandurangarao N. Kulkarni
Speech perception in noisy environments is reduced in human with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) due to masking. Moderate SNHL cannot be cured medically hence masking effects should be reduced to enhance speech perception. To reduce masking, processing delay and hardware complexity the present paper is proposed a scheme to partition the voice signal into two signals which are complementary to each other by using the filter-bank summation method (FBSM) with a set of time-varying recursive band pass filters. Performance of the filter is evaluated with following measures: perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ), mean opinion score (MOS) for speech quality and modified rhyme test (MRT) for speech intelligibility. The test signals used for the evaluation of quality are a syllable and a word and for the evaluation of intelligibility 300 monosyllabic words are used. The results demonstrated an increase in the quality and intelligibility of processed speech in a noisy environment. As a result, there is an enhancement in perception of processed speech in a noisy environment.

Grid-connected double-stage PV system with space vector PWM inverter and MPPT

10.11591/ijape.v13.i4.pp900-908
Ankathi Manjula , A. Ramesh Babu
Because of the increasing demand for non-conventional energy sources, photovoltaic system integration into the electrical grid is becoming more crucial. It is advised to employ a double-stage grid-connected PV system. This can be employed with the main parts boost converter, which helps to boost the DC output from the PV channels. And next one is the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) inverter which can provide better harmonic performance and higher efficiency compared to traditional PWM methods. The SVPWM technique is employed to modulate the inverter output, generating a sinusoidal AC waveform that matches the grid frequency and voltage. By adjusting the pulse width to achieve effective and trustworthy grid integration. To maximize power extraction takes place by using maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The SVPWM inverter is crucial in converting DC power to AC power and enabling grid connection. Utilizing SVPWM allows exact control of voltage magnitude, frequency, and phase angle to provide high-quality sinusoidal AC output voltage. The power quality of the electricity pumped into the grid is improved by this precise management, which also ensures adherence to grid standards and reduces harmonic interference.
