10.11591/ijeecs.v20.i2.pp583-592
Mohamed Abdul Raouf Shafei , Mohamed Abdelazeem Tawfik , Doaa Khalil Ibrahim
As the building sector has the largest share of energy consumption in most countries of the world, this paper focused on the study of one of the most important of the buildings which are the airports. Airports can play a major role in reducing the burden on the electrical grid as they have several factors that make them optimum models for applying energy efficiency strategies. Accordingly, the contribution in this paper is achieved by applying a Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) scheme to improve the energy efficiency of the Egyptian airports without compromising the comfort level of the occupants and validating the obtained results by the aid of “DesignBuilder” software conducted with the “EnergyPlus” simulator, which is a state-of-the-art 3D simulator tool for checking building energy, carbon, lighting, and comfort performance. The applied 3D simulator evaluates the impacts of implementing the proposed fuzzy control system instead of ON/OFF control schemes or Building Management System (BMS). In this context, case studies were conducted at three different Egyptian airports as a high, medium, and low occupancy level airports respectively to discuss the opportunities and challenges of applying the fuzzy logic scheme in airports according to the occupancy level.

Disasters cause material losses, morbidity, and deaths. Support for the role of hospitals and health workers, especially nurses, is needed to reduce the number of victims in each disaster. Using a cross-sectional survey design, this study aims to analyze the relationship between nurse’s perceptions of hospital facility support and disaster preparedness. One hundred sixty seven respondents were selected using proportional random sampling. Disaster preparedness evaluation tool (DPET) was used to assess the participants’ readiness, and the Health Sector Self-Assessment Tool for Disaster Risk Reduction was used to assess nurse’s perceptions of hospital facility support. The final results of the analysis using the Spearman Rank test showed a significant correlation between hospital infrastructure support and emergency nurse’s preparedness in disaster preparedness with a p-value (0.00). The higher the nurse’s perceptions of hospital facility support, the higher their preparedness in disaster management is. Strengthening guidelines of disaster planning in hospitals, especially regarding the ability of hospitals to overcome the impacts of disasters, will provide optimal support for emergency nurses during a disaster crisis.

This paper presents an implementation of Space-time Trellis Codes for 4-state on FPGA. To reach the very high data rates provided in STTC, a lot of expensive high-speed Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) should be employed for the real time applications, while it might not be affordable. This fact has motivated in designing dedicated hardware implementations using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) with low cost and power consumption. The hardware device XC3S400, family Xilinx Spartan-3, and package PQ208 are used in this project, in which the STTC encoder and decoder utilizes maximum 10% and 22% as that of available device capacity respectively. The design has been simulated and synthesized successfully in Xilinx integrated software environment.

The role of the grounding system in the safety of the power system and protection of personnel is obvious during an unexpected short circuit or lightning discharge at the substation. The aim of this work is to analyze the effects of several parameters: lightning impulse front time, soil resistivity and types of grid materials on the grounding system of the Substation. The ground potential rise (GPR), touch voltage and step voltage of a 50 m x 60 m grounding grid buried at a depth of 0.5 m were computed using CDEGS when injected by impulse with different front times. Results show that the shorter the front time of lightning impulse waveform, the higher the value of GPR, touch voltage and step voltage. Meanwhile, when the value of soil resistivity is increased, the value of GPR, touch voltage and step voltage is also increased. Lastly, different types of grid conductor materials give different values of GPR, touch voltage and step voltage. However, it can be said that the differences are too small to be of any significance.

Gobi Mohan Sivasubramanian , Murali Narayanamurthy
This paper focuses on design of closed-loop control for pulse width modulated AC chopper controlled capacitor run induction motor drive engaging enriched optimization algorithm based on foraging of bacteria. Capacitor run induction motor is a non-linear device and its parameter varies under different functional point of the system. A linearized increment model for PWM AC chopper is illustrated for a particular functional point of the drive. The conventional method does not provide acceptable performance under different load conditions. Bacteria foraging optimization technique categorizes accurate control parameters for the superlative dynamic response under unit step load variations. Field Programmable Gate Array is implemented practically for a particular functional point of the drive to exhibit accurate performance. Experimental and simulated results are obtained to authenticate the effectiveness of the optimized controller.

10.11591/ijeecs.v20.i2.pp619-626
Aziah Khamis , Nur Diana Nordin , Mohamad Hafiszi Mokhtar
This paper presents the performance evaluation of a double chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) to obtain the maximum amount of power production. Previous works have shown that the performance of a double chamber MFC varies depending on the design of the MFC and the type of waste water. Therefore, various MFC tests were conducted to obtain the maximum amount of power production by varying the distance of electrodes and thickness of the electrode. The types of water were also varied (i.e., fertilizer water, lake water, and soil water) to highlight the effect of the expected different amount of microbes. The experimental results demonstrated that the thicker anode (0.6 cm) and the shorter distances between electrodes (15 cm) showed higher amount of power production in all the three types of waste water. Furthermore, the fertilizer water generated a higher amount of power compared to the soil and lake water.

10.11591/ijres.v9.i3.pp183-200
Navabharath Reddy G , Sruti Setlam , V. Prakasam , D. Kiran Kumar
Low power consumption is the necessity for the integrated circuit design in CMOS technology of nanometerscale. Recent research proves that to achieve low power dissipation, implementation of approximate designs is the best design when compared to accurate designs. In most of the multimedia applications, DSP blocks has been used as the core blocks. Most of the video and image processing algorithms implemented by these DSP blocks, where result will be in the form of image or video for human observing. As human sense of observation is less, the output of the DSP blocks allows being numerically approximate instead of being accurate. The concession on numerical exactness allows proposing approximate analysis. In this project approximate adders, approximate compressors and multipliers are proposed. Two approximate adders namely PA1 and PA2 are proposed which are of type TGA which provides better results like PA1 comprises of 14 transistors and 2 error distance, achieves reduction in delay by 64.9 % and reduction in power by 74.33% whereas the TGA1 had 16 transistors and more power dissipation.PA2 comprises of 20 transistors and 2 error distance. Similarly PA2 achieves delay reduction by 51.43%, power gets reduced by 67.2%. PDP is reduced by 61.97 % whereas TGA2 had 22 transistors. An Approximate 4-2 compressor was proposed in this project to reduce the number of partial product. The compressor design in circuit level took 30 transistors with 4 errors out of 16 combinations whereas existing compressor design 1 took 38 and design 2 took 36 transistors. By using the proposed adder and compressors, approximate 4x4 multiplier is proposed. The proposed multiplier achieves delay 124.56 (ns) and power 29.332 (uW) which is reduced by 68.01% in terms of delay and 95.97 % in terms of power when compared to accurate multiplier.

Maintaining the quality of the water quality is one of the important aspects that play a substantial effect on the aquaculture industry especially in the tilapia industry. The quality of the water needs to be continuously monitored as any deviation from the allowed critical parameters such as water temperature and potential of hydrogen (pH) can cause unwanted scenarios such as disease, stress, higher mortality rate and profit loss. Currently, the monitoring process adopted by most fish breeders is done manually by using a portable sensor. This approach is found to be very tedious, ineffective use of manpower and time consuming particularly for the large-scale aquaculture industry. Hence, this research focuses on developing a simple, low-cost automated water quality monitoring system for the tilapia industry via LabVIEW software. The developed system will be able to monitor the parameter in real-time continuously with the capability of record and analyze each reading in a more efficient way. A data acquisition (DAQ) of NI myRIO-1900 is used as an interface between sensors and a monitoring station equipped with LabVIEW. Additionally, the developed system is equipped with an alarm system to alert the user when any deviation of the parameters occurs. Result shows that the system has a small range of average relative error of 4.28% and 6.22% for temperature and pH level respectively as compare to the portable sensor. Note that the errors are down to the selection of sensors. Furthermore, the developed prototype of the monitoring system has advantages in terms of its flexibility in extending the system with more sensors and allows a longer period of data collection without human intervention. The system is also upgradable with the integration of a control element to control the parameter when the monitored parameter is exceeded the threshold value. Succinctly, the system offers lots of advantages to the aquaculture industries with further improvement leads to better performance.

Walder Andre
Here, we present a modified version of the Karatsuba algorithm to facilitate the FPGA-based implementation of three signed multipliers: 32-bit × 32-bit, 128-bit x 128-bit, and 512-bit × 512-bit. We also implement the conventional 32-bit × 32-bit multiplier for comparative purposes. The Karatsuba algorithm is preferable for multiplications with very large operands such as 64-bit × 64-bit, 128-bit × 128-bit, 256-bit × 256-bit, 512-bit × 512-bit multipliers and up. Experimental results show that the Karatsuba multiplier uses less hardware in the FPGA compared to the conventional multiplier. The Xilinx xc7k325tfbg900 FPGA using the Genesis 2 development board is used to implement the proposed scheme. The results obtained are promising for applications that require rapid implementation and reconfiguration of cryptographic algorithms.
