10.11591/ijece.v10i2.pp1868-1884
Ibrahim K. Mohammed , Abdulla I. Abdulla
This research work presents an efficient hybrid control methodology through combining the traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) optimal controlher. The proposed hybrid control approach is adopted to design three degree of freedom (3DOF) stabilizing system for helicopter. The gain parameters of the classic PID controller are determined using the elements of the LQR feedback gain matrix. The dynamic behaviour of the LQR based PID controller, is modeled and the formulated in state space form to enable utlizing state feedback controller technique. The performance of the proposed LQR based LQR controller is improved by using Genetic Algorithm optimization method which are adopted to obtain optimum values for LQR controller gain parameters. The LQR-PID hybrid controller is simulated using Matlab environment and its performance is evaluated based on rise time, settling time, overshoot and steady state error parameters to validate the proposed 3DOF helicopter balancing system. Based on GA tuning approach, the simulation results suggest that the hybrid LQR-PID controller can be effectively adopted to stabilize the 3DOF helicopter system.

A. Bellakhdar , A. Telia , J. L. Coutaz
We present an analytical model for the I-V characteristics of AlGaN/GaN and AlInN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMT). Our study focuses on the influence of a GaN capping layer, and of thermal and self-heating effects. Spontaneous and piezoelectric polarizations at Al (Ga,In)N/GaN and GaN/Al(Ga,In)N interfaces have been incorporated in the analysis. Our model permits to fit several published data. Our results indicate that the GaN cap layer reduces the sheet density of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG), leading to a decrease of the drain current, and that n+-doped GaN cap layer provides a higher sheet density than undoped one. In n+GaN/AlInN/GaN HEMTs, the sheet carrier concentration is higher than in n+GaN/AlGaN/GaN HEMTs, due to the higher spontaneous polarization charge and conduction band discontinuity at the substrate/barrier layer interface.

Detection of partially overlapped masses in mammograms

10.11591/ijeecs.v18.i1.pp235-241
Mustafa Haitham Alhabib , Omar Haitham Alhabib
Breast cancer remains one of the major causes of cancer deaths among women. For decades, screening mammography has been one of the most common methods for early cancer detection and diagnosis. Digital mammography images are created by applying a small burst of x-rays that pass through the breast to a solid-state detector, which transmits the electronic signals to a computer to form a digital image. However, due to projection, some mass areas may be partially covered, which makes them difficult to be interprated. This paper addresses the issue of potential mass regions being distorted by other normal breast tissues, which will negatively affect some of the features being extracted from the mass and in turn deteriorate the classification accuracy. The goal was to estimate the overlapped parts of the mass border using Euclidean distance in order to give more accurate results in next stages. The presented method achieved 95.744% region sensitivity at 0.333 False Positive per Image (FPI), outperforming other researches in this branch of mammography analysis.

10.11591/ijece.v10i2.pp1524-1532
Deepika T. , Prakash P.
The flourishing development of the cloud computing paradigm provides several services in the industrial business world. Power consumption by cloud data centers is one of the crucial issues for service providers in the domain of cloud computing. Pursuant to the rapid technology enhancements in cloud environments and data centers augmentations, power utilization in data centers is expected to grow unabated. A diverse set of numerous connected devices, engaged with the ubiquitous cloud, results in unprecedented power utilization by the data centers, accompanied by increased carbon footprints. Nearly a million physical machines (PM) are running all over the data centers, along with (5 – 6) million virtual machines (VM). In the next five years, the power needs of this domain are expected to spiral up to 5% of global power production. The virtual machine power consumption reduction impacts the diminishing of the PM’s power, however further changing in power consumption of data center year by year, to aid the cloud vendors using prediction methods. The sudden fluctuation in power utilization will cause power outage in the cloud data centers. This paper aims to forecast the VM power consumption with the help of regressive predictive analysis, one of the Machine Learning (ML) techniques. The potency of this approach to make better predictions of future value, using Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) regressor which provides 91% of accuracy during the prediction process.

10.11591/ijece.v10i2.pp2164-2172
Fredy Martinez , Edwar Jacinto , Fernando Martinez
This paper presents a low cost strategy for real-time estimation of the position of obstacles in an unknown environment for autonomous robots. The strategy was intended for use in autonomous service robots, which navigate in unknown and dynamic indoor environments. In addition to human interaction, these environments are characterized by a design created for the human being, which is why our developments seek morphological and functional similarity equivalent to the human model. We use a pair of cameras on our robot to achieve a stereoscopic vision of the environment, and we analyze this information to determine the distance to obstacles using an algorithm that mimics bacterial behavior. The algorithm was evaluated on our robotic platform demonstrating high performance in the location of obstacles and real-time operation.

10.11591/ijece.v10i2.pp1980-1992
El Ghouch Nihad , Kouissi Mohamed , En-Naimi El Mokhtar
Several researches in the field of adaptive learning systems has developed systems and techniques to guide the learner and reduce cognitive overload, making learning adaptation essential to better understand preferences, the constraints and learning habits of the learner. Thus, it is particularly advisable to propose online learning systems that are able to collect and detect information describing the learning process in an automatic and deductive way, and to rely on this information to follow the learner in real time and offer him training according to his dynamic learning pace. This article proposes a multi-agent adaptive learning system to make a real decision based on a current learning situation. This decision will be made by performing a hypride cycle of the Case-Based Reasonning approach in order to follow the learner and provide him with an individualized learning path according to Felder Silverman learning style model and his learning traces to predict his future learning status. To ensure this decision, we assign at each stage of the Incremental Hybrid Case-Based Reasoning at least one active agent performing a particular task and a broker agent that collaborates between the different agents in the system.

10.11591/ijece.v10i2.pp1398-1405
Mohamed Elhefnawy
In this paper, a phased array antenna is designed and simulated. The antenna array consists of four circularly polarized slotted waveguide elements. The antenna array is simulated using CST MWS. The simulation results for the proposed antenna array at different values of progressive phase shift demonstrate that the S‒parameters for all four ports are less than ‒10 dB over at least 2% bandwidth, the simulated maximum gain is 13.95 dB, the simulated beamwidth can be 19˚ or narrower based on the value of the progressive phase shift. , the range of frequencies over which the simulated Axial Ratio (AR) is below 3 dB is not fixed and varied according to the selected progressive phase shift. The proposed four-element RF front-end is simulated using Advanced Design System (ADS) at operating frequency of 9.6 GHz. The obtained simulation results by ADS indicate the feasibility of implementing the proposed RF-front end for feeding the antenna array to realize analog beamforming.
