An ant colony algorithm for universiti sultan zainal abidin examination timetabling problem

The real-life construction of examination timetabling problem is considered as a common problem that always encountered and experienced in educational institution whether in school, college, and university. This problem is usually experienced by the academic management department where they have trouble to handle complexity for assign examination into a suitable timeslot manually. In this paper, an algorithm approach of ant colony optimisation (ACO) is presented to find an effective solution for dealing with Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) examination timetabling problems. A combination of heuristic with ACO algorithm contributes the development solution in order to simplify and optimize the pheromone occurrence of matrix updates which include the constraints problem. The implementation of real dataset instances from academic management is applied to the approach for generating the result of examination timetable. The result and performance that obtained will be used for further use to evaluate the quality and observe the solution whether our examination timetabling system is reliable and efficient than the manual management that can deal the constraints problem.

A framework implementation of surveillance tracking system based on PIR motion sensors

A motion tracking system made from affordable hardware components is implemented to be used inside the University of Kufa (UoK) buildings to track and detect any suspicious activities. The current research objectives are to automatically monitor, track intruders using sensors, servo, and camera that occurs around the system using Arduino microcontroller. The mounted camera track, capture the moving object and sending a live broadcast to a receiving host which could be a desktop computer, laptop, tablet or a smartphone. In this study, we consider the problem of automated position estimation using the electronic circuit of inexpensive binary motion sensors. We present simulation and experiments with Passive Infrared (PIR) motion sensors that suggest our current estimator. Fritzing software simulator is used to test and draw the circuits of the system. The proposed design worked efficiently during the experiments and shown high performance with 360 degrees of detection for the sensing environments.

Enhancement gain of broadband elliptical microstrip patch array antenna with mutual coupling for wireless communication

The paper is presented analysis, design and manufacturing single optimize parameters of a new broadband elliptical patch antenna with microstrip center feed line and the array has been implemented to improve gain antenna. The antenna array dimension of mm3 and fabricated on an FR-4 epoxy substrate having relative dielectric constant =4.3, loss tangent tan (δ) =0.002 and the feed line used has characteristic impedance of 50Ω and added the triangle notch structure .Thus notch can achieve maximal additional enhancement impedance bandwidth are (3.679- 6.578) GHz, (13.84-25.142) GHz, (29.807-37.618) GHz and the gain 8dBi. The antenna array performance was modified by inserting stubs transition in feeding Microstrip line to reducing mutual coupling achieve impedance bandwidth (when S11-10dB). The modified antenna was designed to be used for wireless communication application. The simulation results are obtained using CST software.

A smart monitoring and controlling for agricultural pumps using LoRa IOT technology

Controlling electrical pumps on farms can be problematic, especially if there are a small number of people managing or working on huge areas of land and if the provision of electricity is not consistent. Therefore, further techniques for the management of plant irrigation on this type of land are being invented to make the process of irrigation easier. In this paper, a new intelligent device is designed and utilized to control the operation of irrigation pumps using a robust method of communication to transfer information at long distances, for the lowest cost, and the longest battery life. This technology is called LoRa (Long Range) communication, which is a low-power technology. The unit consists of two circuits: the first one is for switching the pumps ON and OFF, while the second one controls and monitoring the work of the pumps. Monitoring of the pumps can also be carried out through smart phones by measuring the voltage. The most important features of this new design are its intelligent control for long distances, cheap price, and a long operational life of more than five years. The goal of this paper is to help farmers by designing and manufacturing a remote-control system that switches irrigation pumps on and off using LoRa technologies.

A novel configuration of THz photonic transmitter

In this paper we present a new design of a photonic transmitter based on multi-layers substrate GaAs and using for generation of THz waves. The proposed circuit is composed from a photodetector (PD) “which converts the light to the electrical signal”, THz Antenna, low-pass filter and DC probe. Firstly we have optimized the THz antenna using an EM solver which is Momentum integrated in ADS “Advanced Design System”.Then we have optimized the low pass filter which plays the role of inductance that is an RF choke permiting to separate the RF signal from the DC one. Finally, we have associated the different components, add the DC probe and simulate the whole proposed system. The dimensions of the final circuit are 400.317x167.16 UM2 . The obtain results permit to validate the final circuit at THz and make it suitable for THz applications.

Automated parking management system for identifying vehicle number plate

By using image processing, the Automated parking management system (APMS) to recognize the license plate number for efficient management of vehicle parking and vehicle billing. It is an independent real-time system, reduces number of people involvement in parking areas. The main aim of this system is to automated payment collection. This (APMS) system extract and recognize license plate numbers from the vehicles, then that image is being processed and used to generate an electronic bill. Generally in the parking lots heavy labor work is needed. This system used to decrease the cost of the labor and also enhance the performance of the APMS. This system is composed of vehicles license plate number extraction, character segmentation and character recognition. A proper pre-processing is done before extracting the license plate and it also generates the entry time and exit time of the vehicle and finally generates the electronic bill.

Survey on underwater optical wireless communication: perspectives and challenges

The demand for underwater communication is growing at a faster pace since few decades. Maximizing the communication performance and building efficient network architecture for underwater communication is a challenging task. Due to the reduced bandwidth, high error rate, noise, propagation delay, water currents and increased cost in the network topology, the existing communication techniques are not feasible for underwater communication. Research in high speed underwater transmission technology has become a primary need in today’s world. By using underwater acoustic sensor network high transmission distance can be achieved but with lower data rates, high power consumption, larger delays and with higher cost. Underwater Optical Communication can be used to increase data rates and lower delays but it suffers from high attenuation due to which it cannot be used for data transfer over larger distances. Research in the area of hybrid sensor networks is a challenging task and has many open research challenges, which needs to be solved. In this paper we discuss the various architectures of underwater communication. A comparative study is made on different routing protocols and localization algorithms. The challenges faced by acoustic and optical communication are also discussed.

Application of virtual windows to determine the path of a uniformly moving obstacle

Design and analysis of PM motor with semi-circle stator design using 2D-finite element analysis

This paper presents a basic approach to reduce an overall weight of selected PM motor. The approach is not based on normal sizing step by keeping the overall design in symmetry dimension, but by introducing semi-circle stator design. The investigation takes 12-slot/10-pole motor as a subject due to it symmetric winding disposition. Two designs are included, both having identical semi-circle stator but different in rotor configuration. Design 1 has a standard rotor design that equipped with 10-pole while Design 2 has a semi-circle rotor design following the stator design. This inherently result an even number of pole i.e. 5. From the investigation using 2D-Finite Element Analysis, an overall weight in PM motor can be theoretically reduced by having asymmetric design dimension. However, motor torque performance would deteriorate and unwanted noise may exist due to high cogging torque and high output torque ripple. A proper design procedure that includes parameter optimization and intelligent switching for optimum current excitation is required to restore the desired torque.

The usability analysis of using augmented reality for linus students

Mobile technology with Augmented Reality has become popular worldwide with a broad range of users, including students from all levels of education and the impact of mobile technology in classrooms has been extensively studied. This technology can be the source of motivation for LINUS students especially students with disabilities. The word usability also refers to the methods to improve the ease of use during a design process. Among the difficulties in teaching a LINUS student is the lack of visual media for understanding the subject especially in basic mathematics such as evaluating a number and calculating the number. The objective of the study was to evaluate the usability of using Augmented Reality in a mobile application among LINUS students in primary schools. This study used survey data gathered from 32 LINUS students of 3 different primary schools in Marang and Kuala Terengganu Districts. The questionnaire collected data on five construct of usability test to the LINUS students. The students used the mobile application while being guide by their teacher. They navigated all the buttons provided and answered the quiz too. The criteria of usability test consist of five constructs. The students showed a significant interest in learning numbers by actively participating in the LINUS sessions. The usability level was measured based on the five constructs. In summary, the augmented reality mobile application has a great potential to be used in teaching and learning, as in the Malaysia Education Development Plan 2013-2025 especially on the LINUS students.

Gazing as actual parameter for drowsiness assessment in driving simulators

Many traffic accidents are due to drowsy driving. However, to date, only a few studies have been conducted on the gazing properties related to drowsiness. This study was conducted with the objective of estimating the relationship between gazing properties and drowsiness in three facial expression evaluation (FEE) categories: alert (FEE = 0), lightly drowsy (FEE = 1−2), heavily drowsy (FEE = 3−4). Drowsiness was investigated based on these eye-gazing properties by analyzing the gazing signal utilizing an eye gaze tracker and FEE in a driving simulator environment. The results obtained indicate that gazing properties have significant differences among the three drowsiness conditions, with p < 0.001 in a Kruskal–Wallis test. Furthermore, the overall classification accuracy of the three drowsiness conditions based on gazing properties using a support vector machine was 76.3%. This indicates that our proposed gazing properties can be used to quantitatively assess drowsiness.

Colored facial image restoration by similarity enhanced implicative fuzzy association memory

Image restoration refers to the recovery of an underlying image from an observation that has been corrupted by various types of noise. In a digital forensic software, such image restoration process should be noise-tolerant, robust, fast, and scalable.  In this paper, we apply implicative fuzzy association memory structure in colored facial image restoration with enhanced similarity measure involved in output computarion. The efficacy if the proposed fuzzy associative memory model is verified by the experiment in that it was 95% successful (with zero mean square error) out of 20 tested images.

Impact of inertia weight strategies in particle swarm optimization for solving economic dispatch problem

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a population based stochastic optimization technique inspired by the social learning of birds or fish. Some of the appealing facts of PSO are its convenience, simplicity and easiness of implementation requiring but few parameters adjustments. Inertia Weight (ω) is one of the essential parameters in PSO, which often significantly the affects convergence and the balance between the exploration and exploitation characteristics of PSO. Since the adoption of this parameter, there have been large proposals for determining the value of Inertia Weight Strategy. In order to show the efficiency of this parameter in the Economic Dispatch problem(ED), this paper presents a comprehensive review of one or more than one recent and popular inertia weight strategies reported in the related literature. Among this five recent inertia weight four were randomly chosen for application and subject to empirical studies in this research, namely, Constant (ω), Random (ω), Global-Local Best (ω), Linearly Decreasing (ω), which are then compared in term of performance within the confines of the discussed optimization problem. Morever, the results are compared to those reported in the recent literature and data from SONELGAZ. The study results are quite encouraging showing the good applicability of PSO with adaptive inertia weight for solving economic dispatch problem.

Comparative analysis of first person shooter games on game modes and weapons – military-themed, overwatch, and player unknowns’ battleground

First-person shooter is a video game genre centered on gun and other weapon-based combat in a first-person perspective. It is the second most favored genre among young Korean male gamers. Recently, the resurrected old-school-shooter Overwatch and Battle Royale style Player Unknowns’ Battleground enjoy a big success in  Korean game market and worldwide meanwhile the military-themed games in the genre have shrunken especially in Korean market. In this paper, we take a comparative analysis on the game structures and game modes and particularly the weapon system used in the game to facilitate the player balancing in the team based combat. Two recent successful games in the genre showed different strengths over traditional military-themed first-person-shooter in this comparative study.

Today, the interest of the community to send their children to religious-based schools that is Maahad Tahfiz Center (MTC)) whether managed by Government (State or Federal), private individuals, nonprofit organization (NGO) or certain organizations is very high. The demand that exceeds this offer has seen the growth of MTC rapidly. This situation provides many choices and advantages to parents. However, there is anxiety among parents to choose the MTC that fulfills the features that they want.  Hence modeling decision support system (DSS) in a MTC selection has been modeled using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) provides the effective way for parents to select appropriate MTC. AHP is an effective tool for dealing with the complex decision making and aid the parents to set priorities and provide the best decision in selection MTC. Hopefully by using this model and future development of this model will help the parents make the best choices of MTC based on their preferences.
