Power Quality Analysis of Vienna Rectifier for BLDC Motor Drive Application

10.11591/ijpeds.v7.i1.pp7-16
K. Srinivasan , S. Vijayan , S. Paramasivam , K. Sundaramoorthi
This paper presents the power quality improvements for a BLDC driver using Vienna rectifier as front end converter. The major drawbacks in the BLDC motor drive and non linear load applications are the line pollution and depreciation of the power factor. The conventional power factor correction method is not economical and efficient. It requires bulky components as load changes and produce high THD and less Power factor. The front end converter of BLDC bridge inverter drive is proposed by the Vienna rectifier, which can contribute more significantly in improving the power factor and reduce the line pollution. The Vienna rectifier topology is controlled by the constant switching frequency control technique for wide range of load variation and it reduces the THD, improve the power factor and provide a steady DC link voltage to the bridge inverter to drive the BLDC motor. The design calculation and performance characteristics of BLDC motor and Vienna rectifier are verified by using Matlab simulation.

M. Saravanan , A. Ramesh Babu
Induction heating application uses uniquely high frequency series resonant inverter for achieving high conversion efficiency. The proposed work focus on improving the practical constraints in requiring the cooling arrangements necessary for switching devices used in resonant inverter due to higher switching and conduction losses. By introducing high frequency Multi- MOSFET based series resonant inverter for the application of induction heating with the following merits such as minimum switching and conduction losses using low voltage grade  of automotive MOSFET’s and higher conversion efficiency with high frequency operation. By adding series combination of low voltage ratedMulti MOSFET switches, temperature variation according to the on-state resistance issues can be avoided by sharing the voltage across the switches depends on number switches connected in the bridge circuit without comprising existing system performance parameter such as THD, power factor, output power. Simulation results also presents to verify that the proposed system achieve higher converter efficiency.

10.11591/ijpeds.v7.i1.pp202-216
Nanda Avianto Wicaksono , Abdul Halim , Aries Subiantoro , Feri Yusivar
This paper was intended to examine thoroughly a critical condition of the sensorless induction generator using flux weakening in wind turbine application. The critical condition would happen when the rotor speed reached the critical rotor speed reference. The critical rotor speed reference was the highest of the rotor speed reference that still caused the stable response. It was obtained by increasing the rotor speed reference until the system response became unstable. In the low speed range of wind showed that there was no unstable condition whatever a rotor speed reference was set. On the other hand, there was a critical rotor speed reference in the medium and high speed range of wind. The unstable condition was caused by the induction generator that received a power higher than its capacity, so its rotor speed couldn't be maintained at reference value. The first solution was suggested that the stable condition would be made by setting the rotor speed reference at the minimum critical reference. The second solution was suggested that the controlling rotor speed in triangle area between the critical condition and the operation that used the minimum critical reference for the rotor speed reference. In the triangle area, the rotor speed was controlled by setting the tip speed ratio.

Comparative Steady State Analysis of Boost and Cascaded Boost Converter with Inductive ESR losses & Capacitor Current Behaviour

10.11591/ijpeds.v7.i1.pp159-172
Tanmoy Roy Choudhury , Byamakesh Nayak
In this paper, an overall comparison between the Boost Converter (BC) & Cascaded Converter/ Cascaded Boost Converter (CBC) has been depicted in terms of ideal condition, as well as with the consideration of Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) of inductor(s). The loss comparison in the two converters due to the ESR is also included in this paper. It can be seen that in CBC, voltage gain is more but the power loss due to ESR is also more compared to BC. The parameters of the converters are derived with a consideration of per unit ripple quantity of inductor current and capacitor voltage. A boundary condition between the continuous conduction mode (CCM) & discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) of the inductor current is also shown. The behaviour of the capacitor current for the converters is discussed during ON and OFF condition of the switch(es) during DCM. At the end, the simulation results of both the converters are given for a 20V/100V, 100 W output. The analysis and simulation results are presented in this paper for the verification of the feasibility.

10.11591/ijpeds.v7.i1.pp265-278
Berrezzek Farid , Bourbia Waffa , Bensaker Bachir
This paper deals with  the flatness based approach for sensrless  control of induction motor systems. Two main features of the proposed flatness based control are worth to be mentioned. Firstly, the simplicity of implementation of the flatness approach as a nonlinear feedback linearization control technique. Secondly, when the chosen flat outputs involve non available state variable measurements a nonlinear observer is used to estimate them. The main advantage of the used observer is its ability to exploite the properties of the system nonlinearties. The simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiness of the proposed approach for sensorless control of the considered induction motor.

Optimal operation of Low Cost Topology for Improving the Power Quality in the Wind Power Conversion System

10.11591/ijeecs.v1.i3.pp523-533
E Vani , N Rengarajan
In this paper, Vienna rectifier and Z Source Inverter (ZSI) based Wind Power Conversion System (WPCS) has been proposed with less number of switches to provide high quality power to off grid system.  The three phase full bridge converter has six switches for the conversion of AC-DC and also need separate DC-DC boost converter to boost the DC voltage. In the proposed WPCS, three Phase Vienna rectifier has only three switches for the conversion of AC-DC and also it boosts the DC voltage. The ZSI jointly with Vienna rectifier provides higher, boosted AC voltage and high quality power to the off grid system. The ZSI utilizes the shoot-through states to boost the DC link voltage and also, reduces the Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) noise. The combination of Vienna rectifier and Z source inverter shows the good performance which improves the efficiency and reduces Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The performance of the proposed system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software. Simulation and experimental results expose that, this configuration is beneficial with respect to power quality improvement with less number of switches compared to a conventional converter.

10.11591/ijpeds.v7.i1.pp17-27
Mohammad Jannati , Tole Sutikno , Nik Rumzi Nik Idris , Mohd Junaidi Abdul Aziz
The aim of this research is to provide a high performance vector control of single-phase Induction Motor (IM) drives. It is shown that in the rotating reference frame, the single-phase IM equations can be separated into forward and backward equations with the balanced structure. Based on this, a method for vector control of the single-phase IM, using two modified Rotor Field-Oriented Control (RFOC) algorithms is presented. In order to accommodate forward and backward rotor fluxes in the presented controller, an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) with two different forward and backward currents that are switched interchangeably (switching forward and backward EKF), is proposed. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

The integration of PV with the electric vehicle (EV) charging system has been on the rise due to several factors, namely continuous reduction in the price of PV modules, rapid growth in EV and concern over the effects of greenhouse gases. Over the years, numerous papers have been published on EV charging using the standard utility (grid) electrical supply; however, there seems to be an absence of a comprehensive overview using PV as one of the components for the charger. With the growing interest in this topic, it is timely to review, summarize and update all the related works on PV charging, and to present it as a single reference. For the benefit of a wider audience, the paper also includes the background of EV, as well as a brief description of PV systems. Some of the main features of battery management system (BMS) for EV battery are also presented. It is envisaged that the information gathered in this paper will be a valuable one–stop source of information for researchers working in this topic. The integration of PV with the electric vehicle (EV) charging system has been on the rise due to several factors, namely continuous reduction in the price of PV modules, rapid growth in EV and concern over the effects of greenhouse gases. The main objective of a pre-charging circuit in variable frequency drives is to pre-charge the DC-bus capacitor without any voltage and current overshoot within the specified time. In exisiting variable frequency drives seperte pre-charging circuits (or) thyristor bridges were used due to this drives power density, cost becomes high and control technique becomes complex.  This paper presents about the design of three-phase three-switch buck-type rectifier for pre-charging application used in variable frequency drives which elimates the disadvantages of existing techniques. In this paper we will discuss about design procedure of pre-charging circuit of an 800KW converter with dc-link output voltage of 775V at an input ac voltage of 550V, 60Hz, selection of power and passive components, voltage and current stress of power transistors. In the final this paper discusses about loss distribution of the components and comparison of new converter technique with existing pre-charging techniques.

A Shunt Active Power Filter for 12 Pulse Converter Using Source Current Detection Approach

10.11591/ijpeds.v7.i1.pp225-234
Rajesh T , Nirmalkumar A
A shunt Active Power Filter (APF) with current detection at the source side is considered as a closed-loop system from the view of the whole power distribution system, which is expected with better harmonics filtering performance compared with conventional current detection methods such as load current detection and open loop control.  This paper introduces an efficient source current detection method (direct) control scheme to mitigate the grid current harmonics generated by the twelve pulse converter.  The proposed system uses Control Rectifier (12 –pulse converter) which efficiently regulates the DC voltage by varying the angle of each 6 pulse converter. Moreover, the proposed system uses three winding transformer which eliminates the harmonics during equal angles switching at each six pulse converter which in turn simplifies the operation of the SAPF. The proposed system is simulated in MATLAB SIMULINK to evaluate the performance of the proposed system.
