In linear quadratic regulator (LQR), two different weighting matrices play an important role in presenting the performance of this controller. Instead of using classic common approach, which is trial and error method, this study proposes a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to track the best solution of the weighting matrices. The proposed algorithm is tested on shunt hybrid active power filter (APF) to mitigate the harmonic contents in voltage and current signals in a nonlinear load system. The modeling work of this proposed system is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software. From the simulation, the obtained results proved that using PSO in tuning the LQR controller produce smoother nonlinear voltage and current signals. In fact, the amount of current to be injected into network can be reduced up to 95%. Besides, less time is consumed during searching the optimum weighting matrices using the proposed approach.

Optimizing Tri-Core Permanent-Magnet-Linear-Generator Direct-Drive Wave-Energy-Conversion System Design for Sea Wave Characteristics in South Coast Yogyakarta

10.11591/.v7i2.pp610-618
Fransisco Danang Wijaya , Sarjiya Sarjiya , Muhammad Rifa'i Putra Sugita
According to statistical data, the south coast Yogyakarta has significant ocean wave height which can be used to generate electricity by using wave-energy-converter system. One of the simplest way to convert wave energy to electricity is using direct-drive wave-energy-conversion (WEC) system with permanent-magnet-linear-generator (PMLG). This method is simple because it doesn’t need to convert linear motion to rotational motion. However, PMLG has large electric power losses, has great weight in both of the stator and rotor, and expensive to make. In this paper, a tri-core PMLG was designed. The electric power losses in the winding, translator weight, and manufacturing cost were ideally minimized using multiobjective optimization combined with simulated annealing (SA) algorithm. Then, the design was verified using finite element analysis. The optimized design of this PMLG was simulated using sinusoidal ocean waves which usually occur in the south coast of Yogyakarta to analyze the performance of this linear generator. Simulation result has been shown that this generator can generate 911 watt peak output power at the rated condition and at the optimum load with 81.14% efficiency. This confirms that the optimized design of PMLG is suitable for direct-drive WEC with low power losses and manufacturing cost.

An Adaptive Cross-Layer Architecture to Optimize QoS Provisioning in MANET

10.11591/ijeecs.v6.i1.pp16-25
Asha Asha , G. Mahadevan
Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) is a collection of mobile nodes, which dynamically form a temporary network, without using any infrastructure like wireless access points or base-stations. The provision of QoS guarantees is much more challenging in Mobile Ad hoc Networks. There are many interesting applications such as multimedia services, disaster recovery etc can be supported if Quality-of-Service (QoS) support can be provided for MANETs. But QoS provisioning in MANETs is a very challenging problem when compared to wired IP networks. This is because of unpredictable node mobility, wireless multi-hop communication, contention for wireless channel access, limited battery power and range of mobile devices as well as the absence of a central coordination authority. So, the design of an efficient and reliable routing scheme providing QoS support for such applications is a difficult task. In this paper we studied the challenges and approaches for QoS aware routing techniques.

10.11591/ijece.v7i2.pp576-583
Hussain Attia
A novel design and simulation results of 9-steps automatic AC voltage regulator based on one step-down transformer is presented in this paper. Avoiding the problem of surge at the AC load during controlling jump steps is done through the proposed design. Accurate and smooth controlling function is achieved as well. Instead of the necessity of increasing the number of taps of the used multi tap transformer for wide controlling range of fluctuated AC  supply voltage, the proposed designed adopts using only two step down transformers with 10 Vrms, and 30 Vrms secondary voltages respectively. Through the controlling of the proposed design of AV voltage regulator, the resultant load voltage is equal the AC supply voltage as well as the suitable voltage step which may one of the following voltages; +40V, +30V, +20V, +10V, 0V, -10V, -20V, -30V, -40V. The electronic design is done Multisim software while the electrical circuit connection of step down transformers and relays contacts that is made by using PSIM software for power circuit design.

10.11591/.v7i2.pp659-666
Fransisco Danang Wijaya , Kukuh Daud Pribadi , Sarjiya Sarjiya
This paper proposes a hybrid wind-tidal harvesting system (HWTHS). To extract maximum power from the wind and tidal, HWTHS implements particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm in maximum power point tracking (MPPT) method. The proposed HWTHS had been tested on the range of possible input appropriate to the characteristics of the southern coast of Java. The presented result shows that by using PSO-based MPPT algorithm, maximum power point can be achieved. Thus the efficiency of HWTHS is 92 %, 94 % in wind section and 91 % in tidal section. By using PSO-based MPPT, HWTHS can respond well to changes in wind and tidal speed, whether it's a change from low speed to a higher speed or change from high speed to lower speed wherein time to reach new steady state is ± 0.1 s. At varied wind and tidal speed, PSO algorithm can maintain Cp of the system in the range of 0.47 - 0.48 so that power can be extracted to the maximum.

10.11591/ijece.v7i2.pp729-740
Srete Nikolovski , Goran Slipac , Emir Alibašić
Reliability analysis of substations and generator assessment of power plant stations are very important elements in a design and maintenance process. This paper presents a generator adequacy assessment of a classical “H” scheme for an open conventional substation, which is often used, and a new HIS - High Integrated Switchgear with SF6 gas isolation. Generator adequacy indices of both types of classical and HIS switchgear were compared and the results showed a high level of reliability and availability of the HIS presented substation. The input data were the annual reports of Croatian TSO-Transmission System Operator (HOPS) and statistics of operation events of Croatian National Electricity (HEP Inc.). For the HIS substation, the input reliability data were used from relevant international literature since only few of HIS substations are installed in Croatia. The generator is modelled with a three-state Markov state space model and Monte Carlo simulations were used for the generator assessment analysis. Adequacy indices LOLP and EDNS were obtained using DIgSILENT software.

Zainul Abidin , Koichi Tanno , Shota Mago , Hiroki Tamura
In this paper, a new Instrumentation Amplifier (IA) architecture for biological signal pro-cessing is proposed. First stage of the proposed IA architecture consists of fully balance differential difference amplifier and three resistors. Its second stage was designed by using differential difference amplifier and two resistors. The second stage has smaller number of resistors than that of conventional one. The IA architectures are simulated and compared by using 1P 2M 0:6-m CMOS process. From HSPICE simulation result, lower common-mode voltage can be achieved by the proposed IA architecture. Average common-mode gain (Ac) of the proposed IA architecture is 31:26 dB lower than that of conventional one under 3% resistor mismatches condition. Therefore, the Ac of the proposed IA architecture is more insensitive to resistor mismatches and suitable for biological signal processing.

Fachrurrazi Fachrurrazi , Yuwaldi Away , Saiful Husin
Multi criteria, which are generally used for decision analysis, have certain characteristics that relate to the purpose of the decision. Multi criteria have complex structures and have different weights depending upon the consideration of assessors and the purpose of the decision also. Expert’s judgment will be used to detect the criteria weights that applied by assessors. The aim of this study is a model to detect the criteria weights and biases on the subcontractor selection and detecting the significant weights, as decisive criteria. A method, which is used to modeling the weights detection, is the Solver Application. Data, totaling 40 sets, has been collected that consist of the assessor’s assessment and the expert’s judgment. The result is a pattern of weights and biases detection. The proposed model have been able to detect of 20 criteria weights and biases, that consist of 4 criteria in  the total weights of 60% (as decisive criteria) and 16 criteria in the total weights of 40%. A model has been built by training process performed by the Solver, which the result for MSE training is 9.73711e-08 and for MSE validation is 0.00900528. Novelty in the study is a model to detect pattern of weights criteria and biases on subcontractor selection by transferring the expert's judgment using Solver Application.

A multi-wavelength fiber laser which is based on a Lyot filter is experimentally demonstrated. A combination of four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber and Lyot filter mechanism in the laser cavity is able to generate multi-wavelength with relatively high extinction ratio (ER). At the input current of 100mA, six laser lines with ER more than 5 dB are successfully generated. The wavelength spacing for the multi-wavelength is 0.15nm, corresponding to the characteristics of the Lyot filter used.

This paper reports on an investigation in classification technique employed to classify noised and uncertain data. However, classification is not an easy task. It is a significant challenge to discover knowledge from uncertain data. In fact, we can find many problems. More time we don't have a good or a big learning database for supervised classification. Also, when training data contains noise or missing values, classification accuracy will be affected dramatically. So to extract groups from  data is not easy to do. They are overlapped and not very separated from each other. Another problem which can be cited here is the uncertainty due to measuring devices. Consequentially classification model is not so robust and strong to classify new objects. In this work, we present a novel classification algorithm to cover these problems. We materialize our main idea by using belief function theory to do combination between classification and clustering. This theory treats very well imprecision and uncertainty linked to classification. Experimental results show that our approach has ability to significantly improve the quality of classification of generic database.

The variability of solar irradiance which is caused by the weather conditions could result in the mismatch between the solar PV generation and the demand particularly in the microgrid context. This may lead to the detrimental effects of over/under voltage or over/under frequency. In this regard, this paper presents the laboratory set-up of a grid-connected PV inverter operates in islanding condition. To achieve this, a load control algorithm is proposed to provide the autonomous real time demand control that follows the PV generation to maintain generation-demand equilibrium requirement. The laboratory results show that the proposed load control algorithm can successfully address the voltage and the frequency violation in islanding condition, regardless of the variation of irradiance and power generated by the PV sources.

Voltage Compensation In Wind Power System Using STATCOM Controlled By Soft Computing Techniques

10.11591/.v7i2.pp667-680
Bineeta Mukhopadhyay , Rajib Kumar Mandal , Girish Kumar Choudhary
When severe voltage sags occur in weak power systems associated with grid-connected wind farms employing doubly fed induction generators, voltage instability occurs which may lead to forced disconnection of wind turbine. Shunt flexible AC transmission system devices like static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) may be harnessed to provide voltage support by dynamic injection of reactive power. In this work, the STATCOM provided voltage compensation at the point of common coupling in five test cases, namely, simultaneous occurrence of step change (drop) in wind speed and dip in grid voltage, single line to ground, line to line, double line to ground faults and sudden increment in load by more than a thousand times. Three techniques were employed to control the STATCOM, namely, fuzzy logic, particle swarm optimization and a combination of both. A performance comparison was made among the three soft computing techniques used to control the STATCOM on the basis of the amount of voltage compensation offered at the point of common coupling. The simulations were done with the help of SimPowerSystems available with MATLAB / SIMULINK and the results validated that the STATCOM controlled by all the three techniques offered voltage compensation in all the cases considered.
