Asep Andang , Firmansyah Maulana Nursuwars , Andri Ulus Rahayu , Imam Taufiqurrahman , Ervan Paryono
This study explores the implementation of a five-level cascaded three-phase four-wire inverter as an active power filter to mitigate harmonics in power grids. Harmonic components in the load current are transformed and filtered to create a reference current, which serves as the foundation for designing the inverter’s switching pattern. The predicted current, generated through circuit modeling, is compared with the reference current using the model predictive control (MPC) method. The accuracy of this approach is evaluated using a cost function that measures the difference between the predicted and reference currents. Simulation results reveal that the application of the hybrid power filter can effectively suppress harmonics, reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD) to below 5%, thereby meeting power quality standards. Furthermore, it addresses load imbalances, ensuring that the phase currents at the source remain nearly equal. Additionally, the hybrid power filter significantly decreases the neutral current, reducing it to just one-tenth of its original value. While MPC has demonstrated its effectiveness in controlling power converters and multilevel inverters, its application to active power filters remains underexplored. This study investigates the potential of a four-legged multilevel inverter with MPC to enhance power quality by reducing harmonics in three-phase four wire systems.

Sarwo Turinno , Mochammad Facta , Cahyadi Cahyadi
The dust removal system is a crucial component in the steel industry, designed to eliminate dust and gas generated during the smelting process. Its primary purpose is to prevent personnel in the surrounding area from inhaling harmful dust particles. A dust collector system is used to carry out this process before being removed from the chimney to the outside air. In the operation of the dust collector, there is still limited attention given to optimizing its operation to meet the needs of its load, where the dust collector still operates at maximum capacity continuously when the dust load decreases due to the smelting process, in an idle state. Setting the rotational speed of the fan motor to produce an airflow rate as required using a variable frequency drive (VFD). The Motor speed was varied in low and high conditions at 322 rpm and 879 rpm. The research results showed that the average airflow rate for the speed of 322 rpm was 150,326 m³/h, and it has 384.193 m³/h at the speed of 879 rpm. The energy savings obtained from the application of VFD to control the airflow rate value are 1,253,544 kWh/year, and the cost savings obtained are IDR 1,249,457,447 per year.

Recent studies have highlighted that chest CT scans are crucial for accurately diagnosing COVID-19. However, in rural areas of Indonesia, people may have difficulty assessing CT scans, leading to increased undetected cases. To address this issue, we investigated whether chest X-rays (CXR) could replace CT scans in diagnosing COVID-19 patients. A diagnostic cross-sectional-based study was conducted at Fatmawati General Hospital from January to September 2021. The study included suspected COVID-19 patients in isolation wards and ICU who were over 18, with or without comorbidities, and had complete clinical data and laboratory tests. We analyzed imaging data through reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests, CXR, and chest CT scans. This study enrolled 150 eligible patients. With RT-PCR as the gold standard, we found that CXR had a sensitivity of 86.6% (95% CI: 78.9-92.3%) and chest CT scan had a sensitivity of 91.1% (95% CI: 84.2-95.6%). Similar performance was observed when detecting ground glass opacities (GGO), bilateral laterobasal, and influenza-like syndrome and dyspnea (ILI) between CXR and CT scans. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves demonstrated that CXR is comparable to CT scan, especially in ground glass opacity (GGO) and consolidation (AUC=0.72; 95% CI: 0.61-0.83 and AUC=0.710; 95% CI: 0.64-0.78). The proposed CXR method can be a reliable primary imaging tool for diagnosing COVID-19 by considering ILI. However, chest CT scans remain the most effective diagnostic method for COVID-19. These findings may be useful for the utilization of CXR for diagnosing COVID-19 in areas with limited access to CT scans.

Joseph Anthony Prathap , J. Kanti Prasad , Vivekananda Reddy , Chinthapalli Suheil
This article concentrates on the development of the IC layout for the driving switches of the inverter with improved switching control. This work uses the improved non-carrier switching pattern algorithms to have precise control of inverter switches with twin objectives of i) reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD)% and ii) developing a dedicated system on chip for the improved switching control of the 35-level switched ladder multi-level inverter. The DC voltage of the inputs to the inverter is designated based on the LUO progression, which consists of an improved mathematical formula for deriving its values. Conventionally, the multi-level inverter circuits are driven by the pulse width modulation signals by overlapping the modulating sine wave with different levels of triangle waves, such as phase disposition, phase opposite disposition, and alternate phase opposite disposition, utilized to drive various voltage source inverter topologies. Although the MLI design concentrates on minimal THD%, factors like accuracy, minimum number of switches, and cost demands for advanced switching strategy algorithms. This paper compares the improved switching angle method to the existing algorithm by considering VPEAK, VRMS, and %THD for the 35-level LUO progression-based switched ladder inverter. The IC layout for the improved switching control is developed using the hardware description language code in the Cadence tool and validated by cross-compiling in Simulink MATLAB.

10.11591/ijape.v14.i2.pp449-458
G. Sathish Goud , R. Senthil Kumar
Frequent and severe blackouts are been attributed to insufficient voltage stability, resulting in voltage collapse. To mitigate this issue and ensure adequate voltage stability and damping in power systems, this study explores smart grid solutions. The proposed control strategies are applied to a distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) within a multi-machine system. The recommended approach, radial basis function neural network (RBFNN)-DSTATCOM with support vector machine (SVM), incorporates a PI controller to minimize system deviations. The damping performance of the RBFNN-DSTATCOM controller is analyzed against a fixed-parameter proportional-integral (PI)-DSTATCOM controller. Simulation analysis indicates that the proposed RBFNN-DSTATCOM controller effectively enhances power system stability under various disturbances and operating conditions. Critical bus graphs are provided for scenarios both with and without the DSTATCOM. A parametric evaluation is conducted using the 'powergui' toolbox based on the system's standard ratings. Finally, a comparative analysis is presented, utilizing the results from both systems, with all graphs plotted against time using the power system analysis toolbox (PSAT) in MATLAB.

10.11591/ijape.v14.i2.pp319-327
Neelakanteshwar Rao Battu , Surender Reddy Salkuti
Multi-feed radial distribution systems are used to reduce the losses in the system using reconfiguration techniques. Reconfiguration can reduce the losses in the system only to a certain extent. Introduction of distributed generators has vastly improved the performance of distribution systems. Distributed generators can be used for reduction of loss, the improvement of the voltage profile, and reliability enhancement. Distribution generators play a vital role in reducing the losses in the distribution system. Placement of distributed generators in a multifeed system is a complex task to be solved using classical optimization methods. Classical optimization techniques may sometimes fail to provide a converged solution. Installation of distributed generators at suitable locations in a multi-feed system is found in this paper using the actor-critic learning algorithm. Actorcritic learning approach uses temporal difference error as a signal in making judgements regarding actions to be taken for future states in accordance with rewards that have been obtained by applying the present policy. The approach is applied to a standard 16-bus distribution system for reduction of system losses, and the results are discussed.

The integration of photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy systems is becoming increasingly significant in the modern energy sector. Among various technologies, doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind power systems are extensively utilized due to their superior power control capabilities. Conventional control strategies, such as proportional-integral (PI) controllers, are commonly implemented to stabilize system waveforms. However, recent advancements highlight the potential for improved oscillation damping through optimized controller designs. This paper introduces an optimal fractional-order proportionalintegral-derivative (FOPID) controller integrated with a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) to enhance power system stability. The proposed approach incorporates the dynamic characteristics of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) connected to an infinite grid. A detailed WECS model is developed to assess the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed controller in mitigating power oscillations, particularly under varying wind conditions. The proposed FOPID controller offers enhanced flexibility for parameter tuning, enabling precise damping of power oscillations, and presents a significant advancement over traditional wind turbine systems based on permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM).
