Wind turbines play a critical role in the generation of renewable energy, but their maintenance and inspection, especially in large-scale wind farms, present significant challenges. Traditionally, wind turbines have been inspected manually, a process that is not only time-consuming but also costly and risky. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as an efficient alternative, offering a safer and more economical means of gathering inspection data. However, the challenge lies in the manual analysis of the collected data, which demands expertise and considerable time. This paper proposes using object detection algorithms, specifically YOLOv8, to automate the detection of wind turbines and their defects, streamlining the inspection process. The model is trained on wind turbine images to identify potential faults such as cracks and corrosion. This approach aims to increase the accuracy and efficiency of wind turbine maintenance, ensuring prompt defect detection and reducing both operational costs and downtime.

Biogas produced from biomass is a renewable energy resource with high value potential to support sustainable development. This study presents abridged advances and pathways from biogas and biomethane to electricity with opportunities and challenges in generation, conversion, and storage needed for use in many areas like transportation, power generation and storage, building, and industrial heat production sectors. A high knock resistance, making it suitable for use in thermal systems with high compression rate, characterizes biogas combustion. Various prime movers using biogas as fuel can be used for electricity generation, including direct conversion through fuel cells, which is a significant pathway to sustainable energy storage. Biogas to electricity conversion by a generator set is much more practical today. Turbines, micro turbines, Stirling engines, diesel engines, and petrol engines are only some of the viable possibilities for converting biogas to electricity. Biomethane can be used as a substitute for natural gas in all its applications with little or no modifications to the fuel infrastructure. Finally, this study discusses biogas and biomethane’s limits and contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 14, and 17.

Harmonic reduction in power grids: implementing a four-legged multilevel inverter as an active power filter using model predictive control

10.11591/ijpeds.v16.i2.pp922-935
Asep Andang , Firmansyah Maulana Nursuwars , Andri Ulus Rahayu , Imam Taufiqurrahman , Ervan Paryono
This study explores the implementation of a five-level cascaded three-phase four-wire inverter as an active power filter to mitigate harmonics in power grids. Harmonic components in the load current are transformed and filtered to create a reference current, which serves as the foundation for designing the inverter’s switching pattern. The predicted current, generated through circuit modeling, is compared with the reference current using the model predictive control (MPC) method. The accuracy of this approach is evaluated using a cost function that measures the difference between the predicted and reference currents. Simulation results reveal that the application of the hybrid power filter can effectively suppress harmonics, reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD) to below 5%, thereby meeting power quality standards. Furthermore, it addresses load imbalances, ensuring that the phase currents at the source remain nearly equal. Additionally, the hybrid power filter significantly decreases the neutral current, reducing it to just one-tenth of its original value. While MPC has demonstrated its effectiveness in controlling power converters and multilevel inverters, its application to active power filters remains underexplored. This study investigates the potential of a four-legged multilevel inverter with MPC to enhance power quality by reducing harmonics in three-phase four wire systems.

With its outstanding features, such as high efficiency and torque-producing capability compared with the induction motor, the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) has been increasingly researched and used for electric vehicles. The speed control strategy for both low and high speeds of the IPMSM is studied in conjunction with controllers based on the field oriented control (FOC) structure to ensure accurate and stable system response under various operating conditions. This paper focuses on three control methods: sliding mode control (SMC), backstepping (BSP), and proportional integral (PI) for the speed loop to enhance system stability. Coupled with the presence of load disturbances, environmental disturbances, and uncertainties in parameters, comparisons and observations regarding the three methods can be made to conclude system stability and performance. Finally, simulation results on MATLAB/Simulink software confirm the effectiveness and validity of the proposed speed controllers.

This research investigates the modeling and analysis of a three-phase boost rectifier for DC fast charging systems for electric vehicles (EVs). A mathematical model validated with MATLAB/Simulink simulations examines system behavior under various conditions. Performance analysis in the abc and dq coordinate systems reveals high consistency with theoretical calculations. The average voltage in the dq frame was found to be vd was 685 V and vq was 0 V, with a discrepancy of less than 0.1% from calculated values. However, the average current in the dq frame showed discrepancies due to cross-coupling effects and circuit impedance. Simulations reported id was 211.50 A and iq was 93.50 A, compared to calculated values of id was 151.97 A and iq was 0 V. For the output DC voltage and current, the average values were 983.05 V and 98.31 A, respectively. Three test cases were analyzed, consist of unbalanced three-phase conditions, voltage drops, and load step responses. Case 1 showed the highest total harmonic distortion (THD), Case 2 increased THD further, and Case 3 achieved the lowest THD, demonstrating improved stability under dynamic loads. These findings confirm the system’s minimal deviations from theoretical predictions, enhanced voltage quality, harmonic mitigation, and improved charging efficiency for EV fast charging applications.

System-on-chip design for improved switching angle driven 35-level LUO progression-based multi-level inverter

10.11591/ijpeds.v16.i2.pp974-981
Joseph Anthony Prathap , J. Kanti Prasad , Vivekananda Reddy , Chinthapalli Suheil
This article concentrates on the development of the IC layout for the driving switches of the inverter with improved switching control. This work uses the improved non-carrier switching pattern algorithms to have precise control of inverter switches with twin objectives of i) reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD)% and ii) developing a dedicated system on chip for the improved switching control of the 35-level switched ladder multi-level inverter. The DC voltage of the inputs to the inverter is designated based on the LUO progression, which consists of an improved mathematical formula for deriving its values. Conventionally, the multi-level inverter circuits are driven by the pulse width modulation signals by overlapping the modulating sine wave with different levels of triangle waves, such as phase disposition, phase opposite disposition, and alternate phase opposite disposition, utilized to drive various voltage source inverter topologies. Although the MLI design concentrates on minimal THD%, factors like accuracy, minimum number of switches, and cost demands for advanced switching strategy algorithms. This paper compares the improved switching angle method to the existing algorithm by considering VPEAK, VRMS, and %THD for the 35-level LUO progression-based switched ladder inverter. The IC layout for the improved switching control is developed using the hardware description language code in the Cadence tool and validated by cross-compiling in Simulink MATLAB.
