Currently, attempts are being made to harness wind energy by means of non-conventional electrical machines such as flux reversal machines (FRM). The main advantage of the FRM, when compared with existing synchronous generators (SG), is that all the active parts like PMs and armature windings are mounted on the stator part, whereas leaving the rotor has simple and robust. In this study, the three-phase 6/8-pole flux reversal generators (FRGs) are selected, sized, designed, and analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA). The working principle, choice of stator and rotor poles, and machine design dimensions evaluation (analytical sizing procedure), as well as relevant performance details are discussed in this paper. This study is used to analyze, a popular 6/8 pole, 0.8 kW, 50 Hz, and examine the suitability for the wind energy applications in terms of torque and power density, torque ripple, power factor, and cogging torque under 2D finite element analysis (FEA). The analysis provides an update on the current state-of-the-art and as well as future thrust areas of research necessary to bridge the gap on what is still desired for the practical application of FRMs for wind energy.

Clouds play a crucial role in precipitation and weather prediction. Identifying and differentiating clouds accurately poses a significant challenge. In this paper, we present a novel approach that utilizes the local binary patterns (LBP) feature descriptor to extract color cloud images. We employ feature fusion to combine LBP features from the independent channels of the RGB color space. Furthermore, we apply five well-known feature selection methods, namely ReliefF, Ilfs, correlation-based feature selection (CFS), Fisher, and Lasso, to select relevant and useful features. These selected features are then fed into a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach achieves superior performance by significantly reducing the number of features while maintaining prediction accuracy.

Deepa Machadan Unni , Bindu Gopakumar Rajalekshmi
The effectiveness and efficiency of battery chargers are crucial for the performance of electric vehicles. The growing demand for electric vehicles warrants the development of chargers with better power factor, low distortion for the input current and low total harmonics distortion. An in-depth investigation of different configurations of power factor correction converters with the above features reveals the need for additional circuitry with existing chargers. Hence this paper focuses on reconfiguring the existing voltage source inverter of the propulsion motor drive of electric vehicles (EVs) to obtain a power factor correction converter by a novel switching scheme. A bridgeless boost topology is chosen based on the performance analysis of different power factor correction topologies done on a MATLAB-Simulink platform. The simulation results prove that the proposed reconfigurable front end converter improves the input current drawn by the electric vehicle charger and improves the power quality with a low value for total harmonic distortion of 6.56%. A switching scheme is then developed for the voltage source inverter to reconfigure it as a bridgeless boost power factor correction converter. This scheme result in a high value of 0.75 for the component utilisation factor thus proving its effectiveness as compared to existing schemes.

10.11591/ijape.v13.i4.pp844-852
Siddharthsingh K. Chauhan , Vineeta S. Chauhan
In contemporary power systems, power quality (PQ) has become a matter of paramount concern. The challenges associated with PQ extend beyond conventional three-phase systems, encompassing the integration of various distributed generation (DG) sources like renewable energy installations, storage systems, and diverse power generation technologies such as diesel generators and fuel cells. The prevalent adoption of rapid-switching devices within the utility infrastructure has resulted in a surge of harmonics and reactive power disturbances. The increased use of harmonics-producing loads has led to several power quality issues, particularly harmonics. The distortions caused by these power quality issues must adhere to the limits established by international standards. Mitigation of these concerns is critical, and active power filters are a realistic option. However, passive filters have problems such as bulkiness, and resonance with either/both load and utility impedance, and the source impedance affects filtering properties. As a result, active power filters (APF) are designed to address the shortcomings of passive filters. Active power filters (APF) offer several advantages over passive filters, including compact size, enhanced filtering characteristics, dynamic performance, and flexible operation. The control strategy of APF strongly influences the APF performance, efficiency, and reliability. This paper presents a detailed assessment of current active filter control systems, highlighting their key features. The characteristics, performance, applicability, and implementation of various control techniques are explored and investigated.
